the skies are grey and Mira’s windows are painted with mist and tears
Mama switches off the light, kisses Mira's chubster cheek and turns to go away.
just then,
a faint sugary voice asks a question
Mama,
why does the sky cry?
Mama comes back in
through whispered steps, and listens
is it because I didn't finish my peas tonight?
is it because dada yells at daddy?
is it because daddy screams at you?
the cheeks fall heavy and her eyelids taper together
the light too, flickers as Mira's mind wanders deep into the night
is it because children are hurt?
do angels not like us?
is it because we tear mountains, seas, and trees?
or because there are no homes for dolphins and monkeys? (we should leave their homes alone, the dolphins and monkeys)
do they cry for me, him, and she?
maybe they cry because they are jealous of our smiles? (maybe they cry because they don't know how to smile)
could these be tears of joy?
Mama,
is the sky crying?
